Dioscorea villosa, better known as Wild Yam, is a perennial, twining plant with long knotty, matted roots. The part of the plant that is used is the dried rhizome (which is the bulb, or tuber). Mexican Wild Yam contains hormonal substances very similar to that of progesterone. It was used at one time to make the original contraceptive pills. There are many species of Dioscorea. The actions can vary from species to species.
