Tea Tree Oil

By Holly Gagnon

Tea Tree essential oil, otherwise known as ti tree, or the popular species used, melaleuca alternifolia, is part of the eucalyptus family and is indigenous to Australia. It was first introduced to the western world by the aborigines via Captain Cook in the 1770’s. He began drinking it as a tea and it has progressed in popularity since. It is heavily used commercially, since it is used so extensively, there have been many studies on its effects and properties.

The essential oil is produced by steam distillation. This is where the herb and water are heated. The water turns to steam and passes through the plant, which releases the volatile, or as most people commonly know, the essential oil. Then the steam cools and turns back to water. The essential oil naturally floats on the surface where it is then removed or "decanted".

Tea Tree oil is another essential oil that I carry when I travel. Like Lavender, which I wrote about last month, it is part of my first aid kit. What doesn’t it do? It has anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, and anti-parasitic properties. Because if its anti-fungal properties, many customers have come into to The Mustard Seed to treat fungus. It also can be used to treat cuts, scratches, insect bites, lice, eczema, psoriasis, candidiasis, sinus congestion, and respiratory issues, to name a few.

Inhaled, it’s good for the respiratory system. I infuse it into the air during cold and flu season. In fact, we use it in our “eco-spray”. Also, it can be infused into the air using aromatherapy lamps, humidifiers, or light bulb rings. Customers have commented that they have successfully used Tea Tree for bronchial issues and other respiratory and sinus ailments. It can be used alone or can be found in our essential oil decongestant blend as well. It is popular with teenagers as a treatment for acne and zits and does not leave any scars.

When I get cuts, I reach for the Tea Tree oil. It is non-toxic to humans but I have read that it can be toxic to cats as it may cause Kidney damage, so be aware. Like Lavender, you can clean your entire house with it. It comes in bath soap and has such a fresh scent to it. Certain times of the year, customers come in to deal with head lice. Tea Tree added to shampoo along with using Salandrea’s Scalp Treatment has naturally dealt with such an embarrassing, if not traumatic issue.

Other products that can be found at The Mustard Seed that contain Tea Tree include, Salandrea’s Echinacea/Goldenseal Salve, Life Essence salve, Scalp Oil Treatment, Decongestant Oil Blend, Wally’s Herbal Ear Candles, bath soap, deodorant, and just the straight essential oil, to name a few. This is another essential oil that needs to be in your medicine cabinet!
