The Myth of the Man in the Moon

by Salandrea

So many times each one of us has gazed upon the Moon in it's fullness and recognized the markings that have come to be known as "the Man in the Moon". I often wonder why this serene, knowing, gentle face was not recognized as that of a woman? Some like myself acknowledge that it is symbolic of the suppression of empowerment that still exists in all of us. It seems appropriate for those who do not want individuals to recognized their own uniqueness to stand guard over the true source of empowerment with an overt male force (represented by the "Man" in the Moon).

Look around you; the message is clear in our society, and in most others throughout the globe. The old wise woman has been suppressed for many a year. She is the gatherer of wisdom. Her journey is not an easy one, for she is met with strife and with those who are ready to do battle. She has been made an enemy, and seen as weak when she walked in peace and cried for others. She was seen as evil when she touched the earth and the earth gave back the gifts needed to heal.

Today, she is still scorned, and not welcome in our hearts. We are told in so many ways not to trust her. Her wisdom cannot be sold at a high price, nor can she be controlled by the few who dominate and keep the doors of the Great Temple shut.

I have walked with her in the fields and forests as a child. I trusted her then. She showed me the ways of the plants and the stones. She has taught me the language of the creatures. We danced with the wind and sang songs of the earth and heavens. I believe there where many who joined us, angelic creatures that they were. Somehow in the course of time we became separated, and I forgot.

One day I touched the earth with my hand and heard her call to me--I remembered. The wise woman is with me now. She is in each and every one of us. If you have forgotten, look to the heavens on a clear night sky when the Moon is full. She is there smiling down upon you...
